Straights set victory for Searle in clash of newcomers

Ryan Searle ran out a 3-0 winner against Stephen Burton in a match which was closer than the score line suggests. Searle is through to play Mensur Suljovic in round two at the 2019 PDC World Darts Championship.

It was the battle of the English debutants in the evening’s second match as Searle took on Burton. Searle settled into the match quickest, winning the first two legs to gain a foothold in the contest. Burton won his first leg after capitalizing on missed darts at double from Searle. After missing tops for a 151 finish, Burton found double 10 to level the set. The first set went Searle’s way, ending on double 10.

Searle strengthened his grip on the match at the start of the second set. He missed bullseye for a 170 finish but cleaned up on double 16 for a two leg advantage. A 177 set up 36 for Searle and at the fourth attempt, he hit double 18 to double his lead.

Burton started the third set strongly with a 96 finish but a shed load of missed doubles in leg two allowed Searle to hit double 4 to level the set. With 38 left, Searle split for double 16 and nailed it to move a leg from victory. Burton missed the bull to save the set which enabled Searle to hit tops for a three sets to nil victory
